Trivia Bluff

No trivia skills needed. Just a good bluff.

The pass-the-phone party game where nobody knows the answers. Make up a number, sell it like a fact, and fool the Judge. A kid with a great story beats the know-it-all.

How it started

Invented by a 12-year-old in a theme-park queue.

“Trust me. I read it somewhere.”
Longline Games: great games start somewhere.

We were stuck in a long line at Universal. To pass the time, my son Ryan and I took turns googling the strangest facts we could find and making the other guess the number.

Pretty quickly nobody cared about the right answer. The fun was making one up and defending it with a straight face. By the time we reached the front, Ryan had decided it should be a real game.

So we built it for him, and for every family table where the person who knows the most facts usually wins. In Trivia Bluff, the best storyteller has just as good a chance.

How a round works

Every answer is a number. Nobody knows it.

A question card: how much does Big Ben weigh? Step 1

Hear the question

The Judge reads it out. “How many pounds does Big Ben weigh?”

A player typing a secret guess Step 2

Pick a number

Everyone secretly types a guess, or a total fib, and passes the phone.

The Judge choosing who to believe Step 3

Sell it

Defend your number. “I visited London once, trust me.” The Judge picks who to believe.

The real answer is revealed Step 4

The reveal

The real answer slams in, with a fun fact. Points fly.

Why anyone can win

Being believed scores as much as being right.

Most trivia games reward whoever knows the most, so kids and quieter players drop out. Trivia Bluff scores the story as well as the answer, so the whole table stays in the game.
